Article history: Received on: 05/01/2015 Revised on: 22/01/2015 Accepted on: 07/02/2015 Available online: 27/02/2015 The purpose of current study was to compare the influence on sanitary hygienic parameters of water in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) using natural zeolite and macrophytes Lemna minor and Elodea canadensis like a part of its filtration system with the microbiological indicators of water in conventional RAS. For the quantitative determination the total number of mesophilic microorganisms in 1 ml of water, and the number of certain sanitary indicative (coliforms, E.coli, Enterobacteriaceae) and pathogenic (Salmonella spp.) microorganism were used textile substrates with pre-installed on them selective chromogenic nutrient media. Microbiological testing of water in the both recirculation systems indicated that the total number microorganisms, sanitary indicative coliform bacteria as well as pathogens from the genus Salmonella in recirculation system using natural zeolite and macrophytes like a filter more rapidly declined their numbers compared with microbiological parameters of conventional RAS.

Developing WSN-based traceability system for recirculation aquaculture

Aquaculture has moving from conventional open systems to high density and highly productive land-based recirculation systems. Consumers increased consumption of fish and fish products due to recognition of their nutritional value along with social progress and the improvement of living standards. Traceability system is considered as an effective tool to guarantee safety in fish products and imp...

Application of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as probiotic for Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) cultivated in a biofloc system

Probiotics can improve growth, survival and resistance to pathogenic organisms of the cultivated species in aquaculture systems with water recirculation. However, their possible benefits on biofloc systems have been less studied. In this study, the benefits of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens bacterium, on a biofloc culture of Litopenaeus vannamei were evaluated. B. amyloliquefaciens was applied as d...

Potential PhD Research Projects 2012 – 2013

The world faces critical food security issues due to the combined pressures of population growth, depletion of finite resources and uncertainty in future climate. Of particular concern is the depletion of stocks in wild fisheries, and land-based aquaculture is one response to this problem. This research will look at opportunities to engineer highly efficient, integrated food production systems ...

Evaluation of Recirculation Time in Bubble Train Flow by Using Direct Numerical Simulation

In this research, hydrodynamics of the Bubble Train Flows (BTF) in circular capillaries has been investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS).The Volume of Fluid Based (VOF) interface tracking method and streamwise direction periodic boundary conditions has been applied. The results show that there exists an appropriate agreement between DNS and experimental correlation results. The re...

Effects of stocking density, feeding technique and vitamin C supplementation on the habituation on dry feed of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) pond reared juveniles

Influence of three different stocking densities, vitamin C supplementation of Daphnia spp. and feeding practice (i.e. mechanical, hand) on the success of dry feed habituation of pond reared pikeperch juveniles was investigated through one month trial. Pond reared pikeperch juveniles were harvested 42 days post-fertilisation (mean individual weight 1.1 ± 0.3g) and stocked into the experimental r...
